BC’s Transportation Ministry says it is being forced to take action, because people continue to abandon rabbits on the Trans Canada Highway and Helmcken interchange.
Ministry says rabbits are still being dropped off, creating a hazard for road users and undermining the structural integrity of roads and sidewalks.
Considerable progress had been made in capturing, spaying, neutering, and transferring about 100 rabbits inhabiting the Helmcken interchange.
The project was almost complete when approximately 20 more adult rabbits were released at the location.
Crews will also begin repairing the areas damaged by the rabbit burrows.
In coming weeks, new signs and security cameras will be installed to discourage the abandonment of rabbits there.
Under the Wildlife Act, releasing or abandoning animals carries possible fines of $345 per
