Rhett Mutch shot by Victoria police in 2014
The province’s children’s watchdog wants a full investigation into the shooting death of a 20-year-old Victoria man, shot by police in 2014.
Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond is calling for an inquest into the death of Rhett Mutch.
She says his family faced many hurdles because of his mental health challenges.
Turpel-Lafond says she understands police had to respond to a 9-1-1 call from Mutch’s mother.
She says while officers have been cleared of wrongdoing, she’s hoping law enforcement can learn from the tragedy.
Turpel-Lafound also says an inquest could force the mental health system to confront its role in the death
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. said there was no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by the officer in regard to the shooting.
But the office raised concerns about the actions of Victoria police in the events precluding Mutch’s death.
