WATCH: Despite attempts by protesters to save it, an ancient maple tree in Duncan will be chopped down Friday
Protesters surrounded the local landmark at the end of June trying to stop the Cowichan Valley Regional District from cutting it down.
It’s part of a parking lot expansion at the Island Savings Centre and staff say the maple is near the end of its life and poses a safety concern.
Despite the protesters efforts, officials say the tree will be removed Friday morning.
However, at the request of advocates, the trunk, and a few other pieces of the landmark will be incorporated into the new landscaping.
