There was a spectacular sight in the waters around Sooke these past few days, an algae bloom has turned the water turquoise.
Officials said it is a natural occurrence and is not necessarily and indicator of water quality concerns. Blooms like these can be caused by a combination of factors.
Sooke Mayor Maja Tait said it’s the perfect combination of warm temperatures and recent rain triggering a supply of nutrients that algae are feeding on.
“We do have the CRD staff working in consultation with district staff on this. There is no concern to human or canine health,” she said.
No one knows how long the Sooke Basin will keep the tropical look, it all depends on how long conditions in the water remain.
