WATCH: The 73rd annual Swiftsure International Yacht Race will bring 200 boats to Victoria
We are only a few weeks away now from one of the highlights of the summer season in Victoria.
The 73rd annual Swiftsure International Yacht Race is set for May 28th.
Race officials are expecting more the 200 boats to take part this year, including 6 or 7 of the big ones, over 70 feet in length.
There are five separate races, the longest of which covers 138.1 nautical miles — that’s 256 kilometres from clover point to swiftsure bank and back to ogden point.
“I manage races all over the world, and it’s really special for me to have one of those on par with any of those in the world right here in my home town,” said John Abel, principal race officer.
“We have a number of skippers coming back this year who have done more than 40 Swiftsures, i have two that have done over 40 consecutive Swiftsures,” said Vern Burkhardt.
It’s not just about the race, there will be a beer garden and live music on the Thursday and Friday leading up to race day.
The starting gun will sound at 9 am on Saturday the 28th, and organizers say the best place to watch is Clover Point.
