WATCH: Saanich school board says the provincial government is making it impossible to balance its budget
There are growing money issues for the Saanich School District largely due to the cost of the next generation network — a new way for students to access the internet.
The price tag is estimated at $314,000 this year, up from about $25,000 last year.
“We’re a district now that’s actually supposed to be a good news story. We’re thrilled and we still can’t balance our budget,” said Saanich Board of Education Chair, Victoria Martin.
Also cutting into the bottom line is $700,000 in administrative savings in Saanich that the province is keeping, rather than reinvesting into schools.
“We have had these two significant costs downloaded onto our districts, as they have been to other districts, and they’re the difference between us being able to balance our budget this year,” adds Martin.
The board is expected to ask the provincial government to overturn those decisions.
The board’s next meeting is May 11 and the budget must be balanced by June 30th.
