A record breaking heatwave has settled over the West Coast transforming mid April warmth into a summer sizzler.
Temperature records held for decades are expected to fall across the West over the next three days as abnormally warm weather settles in and nowhere is that being felt more intensely than Port Alberni.
Getting ready to slip into the cool waters of the Stamp River, Ty Marshall’s getting as excited as a little boy about to enjoy a favourite playground.
“No matter how many springs I experience every year I’m like wow. Wow look at this, it’s awesome. Every year it feels new,” says Marshall.
There’s a reason for that this year. In his 35 years in the Alberni Valley the weather has never been this hot this soon. As a whole new level of hot in the Alberni Valley, brings blooms, pops crops and sends jackets to the backs of closets weeks ahead of usual.
“That stuff’s very early. Three weeks probably,” says AlberniWeather.ca’s Chris Alemany.
The temperature cranking up in mid April to mid and high 20 degree territory smashing records held since the 1930’s. As a heatwave takes hold of this valley known for its summer heat, making a sizzling spring.
“You know it’s been very early for all the blossoms and the gardens are starting to pick up,” says Alemany.
And the temperatures forecast to reach 29 by Wednesday.
“Oh it’s a scorcher that’s for sure it gets up into the 25’s to 30’s the 35’s,” says Alberni resident Randy Rose.
But as intense as this April heatwave is, Alex Hopkins says he does remember a spring or two like this in his childhood.
“This is getting into the 40’s or the 50’s,” says Hopkins.
But turning 75 years old today he’s loving the weather as it is.
“Beautiful. But Port Alberni’s got everything here,” says Hopkins.
And for a limited time its offering summer like weather too. That is before showers that the saying goes bring May flowers return by the end of the week.
