Some elementary school students in Tofino are better prepared to survive and earthquake and tsunami tonight.
Children from Wickaninnish Elementary participated in today’s inaugural High Ground Hike as part of Tsunami Preparedness week.
Along with mayor Josie Osbourne and minister Naomi Yamamoto, the 80 kids from grades k-7 hiked the 1 kilometer route from Tonquin Beach along the Tofino evacuation route to one of the district’s high ground assembly areas.
“It’s exciting to have something like this here in Tofino. We are really proud of our preparedness. We take it very seriously and a chance to get the kids involved and learning right from a young age, it’s just a great thing,” said Osbourne
Besides enjoying a great Friday hike, the students also went home with free emergency kids from Emergency Mangement BC.
