They’ve become a tourist attraction of sorts, but not for much longer.
The bunnies that have made a home under the Helmcken overpass in View Royal are on the move.
It’s estimated there are up to 120 bunnies living in this grassy area under the overpass.
And they’re causing lots of problems — distracting drivers, attracting visitors who stop along the highway, damaging the ground and burrowing under nearby homes.
The View Royal Rabbit Rescue has started capturing the rabbits.
So far, about 45 have been safely trapped and spayed or neuter.
At the end of April, the first group of bunnies will be sent to a sanctuary in Texas with the rest going in the Fall.
Thousands of dollars have been raised so far and a big fundraiser is being held April 7th.
Once the animals are gone, crews will repair the damaged areas, including the infrastructure, to discourage re-colonization.
