After a Port Alberni murder investigation lasting four years, RCMP have made an arrest in the death of a 75-year-old man.
The body of Mervin Edmund Hankins was found in his Port Alberni home in January of 2012.
The death was considered suspicious but police say it took four years of what they call “intense investigation” before they gathered sufficient evidence.
At a media conference on Monday, RCMP announced that 46-year-old Channon Coulter was arrested in Mission on Friday.
He’s been charged with one count of second degree murder.
“This is still an on-going investigation the charges are only the first part,” says Inspector Mac Richards of the Port Alberni RCMP. “The trial and hearings (are still ahead) but for the family but I can only hope it provides some sense of closure and relief that there are at least some answers to the questions that I’m sure that they hold.”
Police say Coulter has an existing criminal record, mostly related to property crime and that he worked doing odd jobs for Hankins who was a veteran of the Canadian Navy.
